PDF to ODT Converter (LibreOffice Writer, Text)

Move the text of a PDF, headings included, into an editable ODT document for LibreOffice Writer

Choose a PDF fileTap or click the box — a file picker opens. You can also drag a file onto it.PDF — a document with a text layer; scanned (photographed) pages contain no text to extract

Your files stay with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; no file is ever uploaded to a server.

How it works

Choose your PDF in the box (tap or click) and press "Convert to ODT"; the .odt appears in your downloads under the same name. During conversion the characters stored in the PDF are collected, the hard line ends of the original page are removed so paragraphs flow again, split words are mended, and oversized lines are tagged with LibreOffice Writer's heading styles. A concrete case: the computers at your school or library run LibreOffice instead of Microsoft Office, and you received a 12-page policy handbook as a PDF that needs a few sections updated before it goes out again. Convert it here and open it in Writer: the section headings are listed in the Navigator (F5), each clause arrives as its own paragraph, and you can make the changes and save as ODT or export a fresh PDF. Keep in mind that Writer receives words, not the page design: a table is unrolled into lines, a two-column page into one column, and images, signatures and logos are dropped. If the PDF is a scan, there are no characters to take over, and a warning appears in place of an empty .odt.

This tool is also known as pdf to odt, convert pdf to odt, pdf to libreoffice writer, pdf to opendocument text, edit pdf in libreoffice.

What is ODT (OpenDocument Text)?

ODT is the text document type of the OpenDocument family and the default save format of LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice Writer. It is an open standard developed at OASIS and adopted as ISO/IEC 26300. The file is a ZIP package: an uncompressed "mimetype" entry comes first and declares the document type, the text sits in content.xml as text:h (heading) and text:p (paragraph) elements, and styles and page size live in styles.xml. The converter on this page produces only those parts plus meta.xml and the manifest; Word, Google Docs and WPS read ODT too.

What is the difference between ODT and DOCX?

Both are editable document formats made of XML files inside a ZIP package, and in daily use they do the same job: paragraphs, headings, tables, images. The difference is ownership and default software. ODT is an open OASIS standard and LibreOffice's native format; DOCX is Microsoft's Office Open XML format and Word's default. Each program opens the other's format, but complex documents (nested tables, custom styles, fields) can show small differences. Pick the format of the program that will edit the document: ODT for Writer, DOCX for Word. The document from this tool carries only headings and paragraphs, so nothing is lost when moving between the two.

If the ODT won't open in Word or the text looks messy

Word 2010 and later open ODT files: use File > Open and select the .odt. Word may show a compatibility mode notice the first time; that does not mean the file is damaged. The ODT from this tool carries only paragraphs and headings, so nothing special is lost on the way into Word. If the person editing the document uses Word anyway, the PDF to Word tool saves a step.

Almost every case of "messy" output comes from the PDF itself: on a two-column page the sentences of the columns can interleave, table cells are stacked one under another, and footnote numbers slip into the line. In Writer you can fix such a document in bulk with Edit > Find & Replace, and rebuild a table with Table > Convert > Text to Table.

When to choose ODT and when DOCX

ODT is the OpenDocument text format and the native format of LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice. If the document will be edited by a person or organization that uses LibreOffice, choose ODT: styles, heading levels and page settings arrive the way Writer expects. Some public bodies prefer ODF because it is an open standard.

If you know the other side uses Word, DOCX causes fewer surprises; for plain text going to a recipient whose software you don't know, RTF is a safe common denominator. All three use the same text extraction; only the output format differs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I edit a PDF in LibreOffice?

When LibreOffice opens a PDF directly, it shows it in Draw with every line as a separate text box; small fixes are possible, but writing paragraphs is awkward. To edit the text comfortably, convert the PDF to ODT on this page and open it in Writer: lines join into paragraphs and headings get styles. Use the Draw route when the page layout must stay, the ODT route when the wording must change.

Can I open an ODT file on my phone?

On Android, Collabora Office and WPS Office open and edit ODT, and Google Docs can open an ODT uploaded to Drive. On iPhone and iPad, Apple's Pages does not import ODT; use Collabora Office or Google Docs instead. This tool also works on a phone: choose the PDF, convert, and open the download with one of those apps.

Why are there no images or tables in the ODT?

The tool deliberately carries over only text, headings and paragraphs. In a PDF a table is lines plus positioned bits of text; the cell structure is not stored, and a wrongly built table causes more work than plain lines. Images are not carried over either; if you need one, export that page as a PNG with the PDF to image converter, then place it in Writer via Insert > Image.
