How it works
Type the phone number you use on WhatsApp in the left box. Spaces, dashes and brackets are fine. The easiest way is to start with + and the country code, for example +44 7700 900123; the leading 0 of a national number is removed automatically, so '+44 (0)7700 900123' works too (in countries such as Italy, where the 0 is part of the number, it is kept). If you type the number without +, choose the country in the 'Country code' list; this English page has no default country because it is used from the UK, the US, India and many other places. The tool builds https://wa.me/447700900123. Anything you type as a pre-filled message is added with ?text= and percent-encoded, so commas, question marks, accented letters and emoji survive. Whoever opens the link sees a chat with your number and the message ready in the box; they still decide whether to send it. By default a QR code for the same link is generated as well: print it on a counter sign, menu or business card and customers can scan it with the phone camera to start a chat. Download saves the QR image, Copy takes the link. The link never expires and your number is not uploaded.
This tool is also known as whatsapp link generator, create whatsapp link, wa.me link generator, whatsapp qr code generator, click to chat link.
What is wa.me link (Click to Chat)?
wa.me is WhatsApp's official short-link domain for the feature it calls Click to Chat. Put a phone number in international format after https://wa.me/ and anyone who opens the link gets a WhatsApp chat with that number, on the phone app or on WhatsApp Web and desktop. Text added with ?text= appears pre-filled in the message box. The links are free, need no account setup and do not expire.
What is E.164 number format?
E.164 is the international telephone numbering format defined by the ITU-T: a country code followed by the national significant number, at most 15 digits in total. The trunk prefix used for domestic calls, usually 0, is not part of it. Country codes include 1 for the US and Canada, 44 for the UK, 49 for Germany, 33 for France, 34 for Spain, 90 for Türkiye and 91 for India. WhatsApp links need the number in this format without the plus sign.
What is the difference between a WhatsApp link and an ordinary QR code?
An ordinary QR code generator encodes whatever you type; if you type your phone number, the customer's camera sees only a number and asks what to do with it. This tool first converts the number into the international format WhatsApp understands, encodes the pre-filled message correctly and builds a wa.me link that opens the chat directly; the QR code carries that link. For web addresses, Wi-Fi passwords or contact cards use the general QR code tool; for 'message us on WhatsApp' use this one.
Where a wa.me link helps
To message someone on WhatsApp you normally have to save their number first. A wa.me link skips that: tapping it opens a chat with your number straight away, no contact needed. For a small business it is the shortest way to say 'message us on WhatsApp'.
- The link in an Instagram or TikTok bio
- A 'Order on WhatsApp' button on a website
- A QR code on café tables: 'scan to order or book'
- Business cards, flyers and shop-window stickers
- Google Business Profile and e-mail signatures
Why the number looks different in the link
WhatsApp expects numbers in the international E.164 format: country code first, then the national number with its area code, with no plus sign, no leading 0, no spaces and no dashes. The 0 you dial inside the UK (07700 …) is a trunk prefix used only for domestic calls, so 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123.
The tool does not add the country code twice if it is already there, and it rejects anything with letters or more than 15 digits. It cannot check whether the number is actually registered on WhatsApp, so open the link once on your own phone before you publish it.
Frequently asked questions
Will people see my phone number?
Yes. A wa.me link contains the number in plain sight (wa.me/447700900123), and it is visible in the chat. To hide it you would need WhatsApp Business's own short link instead.
Is the pre-filled message sent automatically?
No. It is only placed in the text box; the person who opened the link decides whether to send, edit or delete it.
What size should I print the QR code?
About 3 × 3 cm is enough for tables and counters. For posters and shop windows read from a distance, choose SVG, which stays sharp at any size. A long pre-filled message makes the code denser, so keep it short.
Is my number stored anywhere?
No. The link and QR code are generated in your browser; the number and message never leave this page.
