Split a GIF into frames
Save every frame of an animated GIF as a separate PNG or JPG in a ZIP, or as one sprite sheet
Your files stay with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; no file is ever uploaded to a server.

How it works
Tap or click the box and choose your GIF; one GIF is processed at a time. Under "Output" the default is one ZIP file: all frames arrive as separate images in a single compressed folder that opens on a phone as well as on a computer. For a GIF with few frames, choose "Download each frame separately" and a separate "Download" button appears for each frame. The sprite sheet option lays the frames out left to right in one image. Example: a 24-frame, 320×240 pixel GIF called cat.gif split into a ZIP gives 24 images, numbered in order from 001 to 024 in their file names. For long GIFs, choose "Every 5th frame" to take only frames 1, 6, 11 and so on. When you press "Split into frames", the result line tells you how many frames were taken and what their frame times are.
This tool is also known as gif splitter, split gif into frames, gif to frames, extract frames from gif, gif frame extractor, gif to sprite sheet, gif to png frames.
What is GIF frame?
An animated GIF is made of still pictures shown one after another; each of them is called a frame. To keep the file small, most GIFs store only the area that changed since the previous frame. That is why the raw frames often look incomplete or patchy. This tool layers each frame over the previous one following the GIF's own rules, so every image you download is the full frame you see on screen.
What is Sprite sheet?
A sprite sheet is a single image in which all frames of an animation are laid out in a grid. Game engines, CSS animations on web pages and some sticker tools want animations in this form: one file is loaded and each frame is read from its position. In this tool the frames go left to right; when a row would pass 4096 pixels, a new row starts below, and the result line gives the number of columns and rows.
What is the difference between splitting a GIF into frames and converting GIF to PNG?
The GIF to PNG tool takes only the first frame and gives you a single PNG; that is enough when you need a cover image or a still version of a GIF. Splitting into frames extracts every frame of the animation separately: use it to capture one moment, edit frames one by one or rebuild the animation in another program. Both give the frame as a full picture; the difference is how many frames you get.
Which output to choose when there are many frames
For a GIF with hundreds of frames, "Download each frame separately" means hundreds of buttons; that is why one ZIP file is the default. When you open the ZIP, the frames are named with their sequence number and sort in the right order in your file manager. If you are only looking for a few moments, "Every 5th frame" cuts the number of files to a fifth.
A sprite sheet is a single image, so it is also handy for a quick look: you see the whole animation at a glance. With a long GIF of large dimensions, though, the sprite sheet can exceed the browser's canvas limit; the tool warns you before doing anything and suggests the ZIP instead.
PNG or JPG?
GIF frames already have at most 256 colors; PNG stores those colors exactly, without loss, and keeps transparent areas. If you are going to edit the frames, make a GIF from them again or turn them into stickers, choose PNG. JPG gives smaller files, but edges can blur slightly and transparent areas turn white.
The frame time in the result line helps when you rebuild the animation in another tool: enter the same time and the animation plays at the same speed. If you took only every 2nd or 5th frame, the listed time already includes the time of the skipped frames, so the reduced set plays the same animation in the same total time.
Frequently asked questions
How do I extract all frames from a GIF?
Choose the GIF in the box, leave "Output" on ZIP and press "Split into frames". Inside the ZIP you download, each frame is a separate PNG with a number that shows its position. On a phone, the Files app opens the ZIP.
Why are the frames not incomplete or patchy?
Many GIFs store only the changed area in each frame. Simple tools hand out those pieces as they are, and the frames look half finished. This tool layers each frame over the previous one using the GIF's own rules, so every image you download is the full frame you see in a player.
Can I take just one specific frame?
There is no field for picking a single frame. The quickest way is to take all frames as a ZIP and pick the one you want; the number in each file name is the frame's position in the GIF. If you only need the first frame, the GIF to PNG tool is faster.
Can I make a GIF from the frames again?
Yes. After editing the frames, choose them in the GIF maker; enter the frame time shown in the result line and the animation plays at its original speed.
