How it works
Type your text in the left panel; the zalgo version appears on the right as you type. The tool adds invisible-code marks after every letter, which are drawn above, through or below that letter. Light adds 2 to 5 marks per letter, medium 4 to 11 and heavy 13 to 26. For example, the 5-letter word 'Hello' at medium grows from 5 characters to about 43: you still see 5 letters, but each is covered with strokes running up and down. 'Above and below' never strikes through the middle of a letter, so the text stays easier to read. The same text with the same settings always gives the same result, so earlier letters do not change while you type; for a different look, change the pattern number. Spaces, line breaks and emoji get no marks. To turn zalgo text you received back into plain text, set the intensity to 'Clean': the marks are removed and accented letters like é or ñ stay intact.
This tool is also known as zalgo text generator, cursed text generator, glitch text generator, creepy text, zalgo text remover, zalgo copy and paste.
What is Zalgo text?
Zalgo text is text whose letters are buried under many accent-like marks stacked above and below them, so it looks broken, shaky and creepy. The name comes from the character of a horror joke (meme) that spread on internet forums in the mid-2000s; it is also called cursed text or glitch text. It is not a separate font: the letters stay the same and invisible-code marks are added after them, which is why the glitch survives copy and paste into another app.
What is Combining mark?
A combining mark is a Unicode character that takes up no space of its own and is drawn above, below or through the letter before it. A decomposed 'é' is the letter e followed by U+0301 (combining acute accent). Unicode's Combining Diacritical Marks block, U+0300 to U+036F, holds 112 marks; ordinary text puts one or two on a letter at most. Zalgo text breaks that habit and stacks dozens on the same letter, and because the screen draws them on top of each other they overflow the line.
What is the difference between zalgo text and fancy text?
Fancy text replaces every letter with another Unicode letter that looks bold or handwritten; the number of letters stays the same and the text stays clean and readable. Zalgo text leaves the letters alone and damages them by adding combining marks after each one; the text becomes several times longer and at heavy intensity spills into the neighbouring lines. Choose fancy text if you want a stylish profile name, and zalgo text for a horror, joke or 'broken screen' effect. You can also combine them: convert to fancy text first, then to zalgo.
Why does zalgo text get cut off or break in some apps?
Zalgo text looks short but is really long: every letter is stored together with the dozens of marks that follow it. Fields with a character limit (usernames, bios, chat boxes) count those marks too; a 20-letter name at heavy intensity can pass 400 characters, and the field cuts it in the middle. The result line tells you how many characters the text grew to; check that number before pasting into a field with a known limit, and lower the intensity if needed.
Some apps deliberately limit or strip these marks, because heavy zalgo spills over the lines above and below and makes a chat unreadable. Screen readers may also try to read each mark one by one, so do not use zalgo in text that blind or low-vision people need to read. If a font does not know a mark it may show a box (□) instead; this tool only uses the basic mark block that every browser font has.
Which intensity should you choose?
The intensity decides how readable the text stays; the list shows the most common uses.
- Light: a gamer tag or social media name, a heading that must stay readable — letters shake but stay clear
- Medium: Halloween posts, horror story titles, meme captions
- Heavy: one short word or a joke message; it spills over lines, so avoid it for long text
- Clean: read a zalgo message someone sent you, or make your own text plain again
Frequently asked questions
How do you make zalgo text?
Type your text in the left panel, pick an intensity and copy the result on the right. No font to install: the result is plain text, so it pastes into WhatsApp, Instagram, Discord, Roblox chat or anywhere else that supports Unicode.
How do I remove zalgo text?
Paste the zalgo text into the left panel and set the intensity to 'Clean'. The tool deletes the combining marks stacked on the letters; real accented letters such as é, ñ or ü are kept. The result line tells you how many marks were removed.
Why do I get the same glitch every time?
The marks are not picked at random but computed from the text and the pattern number. That way the letters you already typed do not change while you keep typing. Change the pattern number for a different look; the same number always gives the same result.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The marks are added and removed entirely in your browser; the text never leaves this page.
