JPG to BMP

Convert a JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP image into a 24-bit color or 8-bit grayscale BMP, resized if you need

Select imagesTap or click the box — a file picker opens. You can also drag a file onto it.JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP; select several images at once and each becomes its own BMP

Your files stay with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; no file is ever uploaded to a server.

How it works

BMP is the uncompressed image format still required by some older programs, embroidery and laser-engraving machines, small displays on microcontroller boards and a number of online application and exam forms. Select the image, choose the color depth and press Convert to BMP. The image is opened in your browser and every pixel is written into the BMP file; transparent areas become white. Because BMP is not compressed, its size depends only on the pixel count: width × height × 3 bytes at 24 bits. Example: a 4000 × 3000 phone photo becomes a 34.33 MB BMP at 24 bits; choose "Set a width" and type 200, and it shrinks to 200 × 150 pixels and about 87.9 KB. If a form asks for a BMP under 100 KB, set a smaller width and check the size in the result line; if it is still over the limit, convert again with a slightly smaller width. The 8-bit grayscale option gives a file three times smaller at the same size but turns colors to gray.

This tool is also known as jpg to bmp, jpg to bmp converter, png to bmp, convert image to bmp, 24 bit bmp converter, jpg to bmp 100kb.

What is BMP?

BMP (bitmap) is Windows' old and simplest image format: a 54-byte header is followed by the blue, green and red value of every pixel in order, with no compression, and the rows are stored bottom to top. That simplicity is why basic software and devices read BMP easily, but the same photo takes 10 to 30 times more space than as a JPG.

What is Color depth (24-bit, 8-bit)?

Color depth is how many bits store one pixel. At 24 bits each pixel is 3 bytes and can show about 16.7 million colors; most BMP files today are like this. At 8 bits each pixel is 1 byte that points into a 256-entry color table; this tool fills the table with 256 shades of gray, so the file is three times smaller and ready for black-and-white printing.

What is the difference between JPG and BMP?

JPG compresses a photo by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps files small but loses a little quality each time it is saved. BMP discards nothing and compresses nothing; every pixel is stored as is, so files are very large but trivial to read. Converting a JPG to BMP does not bring back lost detail; it only puts the image in the form a BMP-only program or device expects.

Why is a BMP so large?

A BMP is not compressed, so its size depends only on its dimensions: width × height × 3 bytes at 24 bits, width × height bytes at 8-bit grayscale; each row is also padded to a multiple of 4 bytes and 54 bytes (1078 at 8 bits) go at the start of the file. A 1920 × 1080 screenshot is 5.93 MB as a 24-bit BMP.

The only ways to shrink it are fewer pixels or 8-bit grayscale. The result line shows the dimensions and BMP size of every file, so you can adjust the width for a form with a size limit.

What happens to transparency and colors?

A 24-bit BMP has no transparency: transparent areas of a PNG or WEBP are placed on white and semi-transparent edges are blended with white. Only the first frame of an animated GIF is used.

With 8-bit grayscale, colors are turned into one gray value weighted by how bright the eye sees them (red 29.9%, green 58.7%, blue 11.4%), the same grayscale formula Paint and most editors use. The color table holds 256 shades of gray.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to BMP?

Select the JPG file on this page and press Convert to BMP. You get a 24-bit color BMP; select several files and each downloads as its own BMP. The image is never uploaded anywhere.

How do I convert a JPG to a BMP under 100 KB?

Choose "Set a width" and type a small width, for example 200 for a landscape photo: a 4:3 image becomes 200 × 150 pixels and about 88 KB at 24 bits. Check the size in the result line; if the form still rejects it, convert again with a smaller width or use 8-bit grayscale.

What happens to a transparent background when converting PNG to BMP?

It becomes white. A 24-bit BMP cannot store transparency, so the tool places transparent areas on a white background and blends semi-transparent edges with white.

What is the difference between 24-bit and 8-bit BMP?

A 24-bit BMP stores each pixel in 3 bytes and shows every color. An 8-bit BMP uses 1 byte per pixel that picks a color from a 256-entry table; in this tool the table is shades of gray, and the file is three times smaller.
