How it works
WEBP spread across the web because it saves space, and most images you save out of a browser now arrive in that format. The problem starts elsewhere: some older programs, office suites and print services cannot open it at all. Choose your WEBP files, pick the target format and press Convert — the browser's own decoder opens the picture and writes it out again as JPG or PNG. Pick PNG when the file has a transparent background, because JPG has no channel for transparency and every see-through area is filled with white. Pick JPG for photographic content, where the quality slider decides the size; 90 is a sound default when the point of the conversion is compatibility rather than compression.

What is WEBP?
WEBP is the format behind most of the images people save out of a browser today, and running into one is usually how they end up on a page like this. It packs a picture into fewer bytes than JPG and can carry transparency and animation as well, which is why sites adopted it so quickly. Its weak spot is everything outside the browser: older photo viewers, office suites, some print services and a fair number of upload forms still refuse the extension, and no setting on your side changes that.
What is JPG?
JPG is the common denominator of digital images — a format from 1992 that virtually every device, operating system, program and service opens without question. That is the whole reason for converting into it: you are not gaining quality, you are gaining certainty that the file will open at the other end. The trade is fixed and worth knowing: JPG compresses with loss and has no transparency, so anything see-through arrives on a white background.
What is the difference between WEBP and JPG?
WEBP is newer and more efficient: it produces a smaller file at the same quality and can carry transparency and animation too. The advantage of JPG is that it opens everywhere. That is precisely the point of this conversion — you are trading efficiency for reach. A file moving from WEBP to JPG may well grow, and its transparent areas end up white; in exchange you can hand the picture to an old program, an office suite or a print shop without wondering whether it will open.
Which target format should you pick?
For photographic content JPG is both smaller and sufficient. For logos, icons and anything with a transparent background, PNG is the correct answer.
If you are not sure, open the image and look behind it: a chequerboard pattern means there is transparency, and transparency means PNG.
Why some WEBP files will not open
Animated WEBP files carry several frames, the way a GIF does. This tool saves the first frame as a still picture; the motion is not preserved.
If the file is damaged, or is not really a WEBP despite its name, the browser cannot decode it either and you get an error message instead of a result.
Expect the file to grow
A WEBP is normally smaller than the same picture as JPG, so the converted file often comes out larger than the one you started with. That is the price of compatibility, not a fault in the conversion.
If size matters at the destination, lower the quality slider a little rather than converting the file twice. Every extra save re-encodes the picture and adds damage that cannot be taken back.
