Convert a PDF to grayscale (black and white)

Turn a color PDF into grayscale; text stays selectable and the printer uses no color ink

Choose the PDF to convertTap or click the box — a file picker opens. You can also drag a file onto it.PDF — color slides, reports, invoices or scanned documents

Your files stay with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; no file is ever uploaded to a server.

How it works

A common case: you are about to print a slide deck full of color charts or a report with a colored logo, but your printer also drains the color cartridges, or an office asks for the document in black and white. Tap or click the box, choose the PDF and press Convert to grayscale. The tool turns every color on the page into a gray that matches how bright the eye sees it: yellow becomes light gray, navy becomes dark gray, so the lines in a chart can still be told apart. Text stays as characters, so you can still search the PDF and copy text. The result line says what was done, for example "12 pages converted to grayscale, text stays selectable · 4 images converted to grayscale". If a page with a color gradient cannot be converted safely this way, that page is turned into a gray image, and the result line says that too.

This tool is also known as pdf to grayscale, pdf black and white, convert pdf to black and white, make pdf grayscale, grayscale pdf converter.

What is Grayscale?

Grayscale reduces every color to a gray that carries only its lightness; the result is a scale of 256 steps from black to white. That is the difference from pure black and white (two tones only): in grayscale, photos and charts keep their detail. This tool uses the weights of the ITU-R BT.601 standard (red 29.9%, green 58.7%, blue 11.4%), because the eye is most sensitive to green; averaging the three channels equally would drop yellow and blue onto the same gray.

What is Vector path and image path?

Text and drawings in a PDF are painted with color commands. On the vector path the tool rewrites those commands one by one into gray; the page stays a drawing, text stays selectable and the file size barely changes. On the image path the page is first rendered as a picture and then turned gray: the result is gray on every document without exception, but text can no longer be selected and small print may blur when zoomed. The tool only uses the image path on pages that need it.

What is the difference between converting a PDF to grayscale and printing in grayscale?

The printer’s "print in grayscale" setting applies to that one print job only, and not every printer driver handles it the same way; some still print black as a mix of color inks. Converting the PDF changes the file itself: whoever you send it to and whichever printer is used, it comes out gray. Convert the file when an office asks for black and white or you hand it to a print shop; for a single print at home, the printer setting is enough.

Which pages are turned into images?

Flat-colored text, lines, table backgrounds, logos and photos are converted to gray on the vector path without trouble. Gradient backgrounds, pattern fills and special print colors (DeviceN) are defined in the PDF by calculated functions; they cannot be pulled to gray safely at the command level, so the tool renders such a page as a 150 DPI gray image.

The result line states how many pages went this way. On a page turned into an image, text cannot be selected and the file may grow a little; the other pages are not affected. If the whole document must be strictly gray, for example for a print shop, choose the "Turn pages into gray images" method.

Why can colors in a chart blend together?

In grayscale two colors stay distinguishable only if their brightness differs. Two colors of similar brightness, such as red and green, can land on the same gray; two slices of a pie chart or two series of a line chart may therefore look like one color on paper. This is not a bug but the nature of grayscale.

If you can reach the chart’s source, separating the series with colors of different lightness, dashed lines or patterns is the lasting fix. If all you have is the PDF, check the result in a preview before printing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a PDF black and white?

Choose your PDF on this page and press Convert to grayscale. The colors are turned gray, the file is prepared in your browser and saved to your Downloads folder; no upload or sign-up.

Can I still copy text after converting?

With the recommended method, yes: text stays as characters and can be selected and searched. Only pages turned into images because of gradients, and the "Turn pages into gray images" method, lose selectable text; the result line tells you.

Does it work on a scanned color document?

Yes. A scanned page is a photo inside the PDF; the tool turns that photo gray and writes it back in the same place. Page layout and size stay the same.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. Converting the colors and writing the new PDF happen entirely inside your browser; the file never leaves this page.
