PDF to TIFF

Turn every page of a PDF into one multi-page TIFF file for archives, fax servers and document systems

Select a PDF fileTap or click the box — a file picker opens. You can also drag a file onto it.PDF — all pages go into one .tif file

Your files stay with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; no file is ever uploaded to a server.

How it works

A common case: an insurer's upload page, a records system at work or a fax server accepts documents only as TIFF, and what you have is a PDF. Select the PDF, keep 200 DPI and Grayscale, and press Convert to TIFF. Every page is rendered in turn and stored as a separate page inside one .tif file, so the receiving system can flip through it like the original. The result line reads, for example, "8 pages in one TIFF file · 200 DPI · grayscale · 1.9 MB". If the document has a color logo, chart or photo that must stay in color, choose Color; the file grows about three times. If the upload has a size limit, try 150 DPI first; 300 DPI suits fine print and documents headed for a printer. On a US Letter page, 200 DPI gives 1700×2200 pixels. Windows Photos and macOS Preview both open multi-page TIFF files.

What is Multi-page TIFF?

TIFF is an image format, but unlike JPG and PNG one file can hold several images. Each one has its own tag table (IFD) inside the file; this tool writes one table per PDF page and records the page number, the total page count and the resolution in it. Fax and document management software read the page count from those tags, which is why a single multi-page TIFF is accepted more readily than a folder of separate images.

What is PackBits compression?

PackBits is one of the baseline lossless compressions of the TIFF standard, so every reader supports it: runs of identical pixels are stored as "120 of this value" instead of 120 copies. Document pages are mostly plain white, so the file shrinks to a small fraction of the raw size while not a single pixel changes. CCITT Group 4, used by fax machines, gives smaller files but only for pure black-and-white pages; this tool does not write it.

What is the difference between PDF to TIFF and PDF to image (PNG/JPG)?

PDF to image turns each page into a separate PNG or JPG, so a 20-page document becomes 20 files. PDF to TIFF keeps all pages in one file and stores the resolution inside it. PNG or JPG is better for posting a page online or dropping it into slides; TIFF is better when the whole document has to be uploaded as one piece to an archive, a fax server or an office system.

The text is no longer selectable: TIFF is a picture

A PDF stores text as characters; a TIFF stores the page as pixels. After conversion you cannot copy or search the text, and zooming in shows the limit of the resolution you chose. Keep the original PDF and send the TIFF only where it is required.

File size grows quickly with resolution: 300 DPI has four times the pixels of 150 DPI per page, and Color stores three values per pixel. Start with 200 DPI grayscale and change only if the receiving system rejects it or a logo must stay in color.

Which resolution fits which job?

150 DPI: documents read on screen and uploads with a size cap. A Letter page becomes 1275×1650 pixels and normal text stays readable.

200 DPI: the usual value for fax and document archives (fine fax mode is close to it). Most insurers and office systems accept paperwork at this setting.

300 DPI: small footnotes, signatures and stamps, or pages that will be printed. The file is more than twice the size of 200 DPI.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to TIFF?

Select the PDF on this page, pick the resolution and color, and press Convert to TIFF. All pages are collected in one multi-page .tif file, built in your browser and saved to your Downloads folder.

Can each page be a separate TIFF?

This tool makes one file on purpose, because most systems that ask for TIFF expect a multi-page file. For separate files per page, the PDF to Image tool saves every page as its own PNG or JPG.

Why is the TIFF so large?

TIFF stores the page as a lossless image, while a PDF stores text as a few bytes per letter. Choose Grayscale and keep 150 or 200 DPI to reduce the size; the result line shows the size of the file.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Rendering the pages and writing the TIFF happen entirely in your browser; the PDF never leaves this page.
