Convert WEBP to GIF

Convert animated or still WEBP to GIF; frame times, loop and transparency are kept

Choose the WEBP files to convert to GIFTap or click the box — a file picker opens. You can also drag a file onto it.Only .webp; animated and still WEBP are accepted, and each file becomes its own GIF. Files never leave your device

Your files stay with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; no file is ever uploaded to a server.

How it works

Tap or click the box and choose your WEBP files; animated and still WEBP are both accepted, and if you choose several files each becomes a separate GIF. Leave "Number of colors in the GIF" at 256 in most cases; for cartoon-style stickers, 64 colors makes the file smaller and the difference is hard to see. When you press "Convert to GIF", the tool decodes each WEBP frame separately, layers the frames following the WEBP's own rules and writes the GIF. Example: a 512×512 pixel animated sticker with 30 frames saved from WhatsApp becomes a 512×512 pixel GIF with 30 frames, and the frame times stay the same. The result line gives the frame count, the size, the total length and how many times it loops. If you give it a still WEBP, you get a single-frame GIF; for a still image, JPG or PNG is usually a better choice.

This tool is also known as webp to gif, animated webp to gif, convert webp to gif, webp to gif converter, whatsapp sticker to gif, telegram sticker to gif, save webp as gif.

What is Animated WEBP?

WEBP is an image format developed by Google that, like GIF, can carry animation. Animated WEBP uses millions of colors and smooth transparency, and often keeps the same animation several times smaller than a GIF. WhatsApp and Telegram animated stickers and many small animations on websites use this format. The problem is compatibility: older programs, some email clients and some social media upload screens do not accept animated WEBP or stop it on the first frame.

What is Frame compositing (layering frames)?

To keep the file small, an animated WEBP often stores only the part of the picture that changed in each frame, along with that part's position. The player places this piece on top of the previous frame, or clears that area first. If frames are taken one by one without applying these rules, the animation looks patchy. This tool reads each frame's position and its blending and clearing rules, builds the full frame and writes it to the GIF that way.

What is the difference between animated WEBP and GIF?

Animated WEBP carries millions of colors and partial transparency in every frame, and its file is often three to five times smaller than a GIF. GIF uses at most 256 colors and on-or-off transparency, but it opens in every program, every email and every forum. Converting WEBP to GIF is therefore about compatibility: the picture gets a little simpler and the file grows, and in return it plays everywhere. If the place you are sharing to accepts WEBP, sending the file as it is is the better option.

What changes in the conversion

The frame count, each frame's time and the loop count are carried over unchanged. Two things change. The first is color: a GIF uses at most 256 colors per frame; the tool samples the palette from all frames so colors do not flicker during the animation, but smooth gradients can still show slight banding. The second is transparency: semi-transparent edges in the WEBP become fully transparent or fully solid in the GIF, so transparent stickers can get slightly jagged edges.

The file size usually grows, because GIF compression is weaker than WEBP's and the tool writes every frame as a full frame. If the GIF is too big for where you want to post it, lower the number of colors or the dimensions with the GIF compressor. The background color stored in the WEBP is not used; like browsers, the tool starts from a transparent background.

Which browsers does it work in?

No separate library is downloaded for decoding; each frame is handed to the browser's own WEBP reader. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari 14 and later decode animated WEBP frames. If a very old Safari or an old phone browser cannot open a frame, the tool tells you which frame of which file it stopped at; in that case, try another browser.

WhatsApp stickers usually sit in the app's own folder on the phone; if you open one in WhatsApp Web on a computer and use "Save image as", it downloads as a .webp file. Some Telegram stickers are not WEBP but TGS or WEBM files; this page converts only WEBP files.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an animated WEBP to GIF?

Choose the WEBP file in the box and press "Convert to GIF". The tool decodes each frame and writes an animated GIF that keeps the frame times and the loop. Save the result with the "Download" button; the result line tells you how many frames and seconds it has.

Can I turn a WhatsApp sticker into a GIF?

Yes, WhatsApp animated stickers are animated WEBP files. Save the sticker to your device as a .webp file and choose it on this page. The sticker's transparent background stays transparent in the GIF; only soft edges may get a little harder.

Why is the GIF bigger than the WEBP?

WEBP compression is much stronger than GIF's; the GIF of the same animation can be several times larger. Lowering the number of colors to 128 or 64 makes the file smaller. To shrink it further, run the GIF through the GIF compressor.

Does it convert a still WEBP too?

Yes, a still WEBP becomes a single-frame GIF. For a still image, though, GIF's 256-color limit is an unnecessary loss; the WEBP to JPG converter turns a photo into JPG and a transparent image into PNG, with better results.
