Rotate or flip an animated GIF

Rotate an animated GIF 90° or 180°, or flip it horizontally or vertically; the animation keeps playing

Choose the GIF files to rotateTap or click the box — a file picker opens. You can also drag a file onto it.Only .gif; if you pick several files, they all get the same turn. Files stay on your device

Your files stay with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; no file is ever uploaded to a server.

How it works

Tap or click the box and choose your GIF; if you choose several GIFs, each one gets the same turn. Then pick what to do. A GIF recorded with the phone held sideways usually needs "Right 90°"; if it comes out upside down, use "Left 90°" on the original instead. Use "180°" for a GIF that is upside down, and "Flip horizontally" when text looks mirrored because it was filmed with the front camera. Example: a 480×270 landscape GIF turned right 90° becomes a 270×480 portrait GIF with the same number of frames and the same length. Press "Rotate"; the result line compares the size before and after the turn and confirms that frames and total time are unchanged. Save it with "Download"; it goes to your Downloads folder.

This tool is also known as rotate gif, flip gif, rotate animated gif, mirror gif, rotate gif 90 degrees, turn gif sideways, flip gif horizontally.

What is Rotating an animated GIF?

An animated GIF is a stack of frames played one after another. Rotating it means turning every one of those frames by the same angle. Many photo rotators only read the first frame, so the result is a still picture. This tool opens each frame as a full image, turns it by 90 or 180 degrees and writes the GIF again with the original frame times. A 90-degree turn swaps width and height.

What is Flipping (mirroring)?

Flipping turns the picture over along an axis, like looking in a mirror. A horizontal flip swaps left and right: mirrored text from a front camera becomes readable, and a character facing left now faces right. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom. Flipping is not rotating: text that was mirrored stays mirrored after a 180-degree turn, it only ends up upside down.

What is the difference between rotating and flipping a GIF?

Rotating turns the whole picture, so everything inside, including text, still reads correctly but sits sideways or upside down. Flipping mirrors the picture: text turns into mirror writing and a right hand becomes a left hand. A GIF recorded sideways or upside down needs a rotation. A GIF whose text looks backwards because it came from a front camera needs a horizontal flip. A 180-degree rotation gives the same result as a horizontal flip followed by a vertical flip.

Why photo rotators break animated GIFs

Most image rotators open a GIF like any other picture. The browser hands them only the first frame, so that is the frame that gets turned, and the animation is gone. This tool decodes every frame, applies the same turn to each one and writes a new GIF that keeps the frame times, the loop count and the transparency.

A GIF usually carries one color table with up to 256 colors. Rotation does not change colors, so the tool rebuilds the same table and every pixel keeps its exact color. A few GIFs carry a separate table for each frame; when all frames together use more than 256 colors, a shared table is rebuilt and the result line says so. The file size can change a little, because each frame is written as a full frame.

Which option to pick, and what this tool does not do

For a GIF recorded with the phone on its side, choose right or left 90°. If you are not sure, try right 90° first; if it is wrong, run the original GIF again with left 90° rather than turning the result twice. Use 180° for upside-down clips and a horizontal flip for mirrored text.

There is no free angle, such as fixing a 15° tilt. Turning a GIF by anything other than a right angle leaves empty corners that would need a transparent or colored fill. To turn a single still picture, use the image rotation tool; to remove part of the picture area, use the GIF crop tool.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate an animated GIF?

Choose the GIF in the box, pick "Right 90°", "Left 90°" or "180°" and press "Rotate". Every frame is turned by the same angle, and the animation and frame times stay the same. Save the result with "Download".

Will rotating a GIF break the animation?

No. The number of frames, the time of each frame and the loop count stay the same. Colors stay the same as well; the exception is the odd GIF that gives every frame its own color table; it gets one shared table instead, and the result says so.

How do I fix mirrored text in a GIF?

GIFs recorded with a front camera often show text as mirror writing. Choose "Flip horizontally". Rotating by 180° does not fix it: the text ends up upside down and still mirrored.

Can I rotate a GIF by 45 degrees?

No, only 90° and 180° turns are available. Any other angle leaves empty corners, and filling them in a GIF costs quality. For clips that were filmed sideways or upside down, 90° and 180° are enough.
