How it works
A common case: you want to read a paper or a manual on your phone, but a third of every Letter or A4 page is white margin and the text looks tiny. Select the PDF, leave one of the "Automatic" options selected and press Crop. Each page is measured the way it appears on screen, the tool finds where text, lines or pictures begin, keeps a 2 mm (about 0.08 in) gap and trims the rest. The result line reads, for example, "12 pages · first page 216×279 mm → 170×226 mm". Keeping all pages the same size looks tidier in print and slides; fitting each page to its own content gains the most room on a small screen. To cut a fixed strip instead (a black scanner edge, a punched-hole shadow), choose "Manual" and type four values in the order top, right, bottom, left, such as 10, 5, 10, 5. One number applies to all four edges. Values are millimeters: 1 in = 25.4 mm, so a half-inch strip is 12.7.
This tool is also known as crop pdf, trim pdf margins, remove white space from pdf, crop pdf pages online, cut pdf margins, pdf margin cropper.
What is CropBox?
The CropBox is the rectangle inside a PDF page that viewers and printers actually show. The physical sheet size is stored in the MediaBox; when the CropBox is smaller, only its inside is displayed. This tool crops by shrinking both boxes, so nothing is redrawn: text stays selectable, image quality is untouched and the file size barely changes.
What is Points, inches and millimeters?
PDF measures everything in points: 72 points make 1 inch, and 1 inch is 25.4 mm, so 1 mm is about 2.83 points. US Letter is 612×792 points (8.5×11 in, 216×279 mm); A4 is 595×842 points. You type millimeters here and the tool converts them; a quarter inch is 6.35 mm and half an inch is 12.7 mm.
What is the difference between cropping a PDF and extracting pages?
Extracting pages takes whole pages out of a document or deletes them: the page count changes, the pages themselves stay as they were. Cropping keeps every page but shrinks the visible area of each one, hiding white margins, scanner edges or running headers. Use page extraction to send a few pages as a separate file; use cropping to make pages easier to read or to remove unwanted borders.
Cropped edges are hidden, not deleted
Cropping a PDF only changes the visible area. Text and images outside the new box are still inside the file, and anyone who enlarges the box in a PDF editor or copies the text can see them again. Do not use cropping to hide a signature, an account number or an address; that needs a redaction tool that really removes the content.
For the same reason cropping does not make the file smaller. If size matters, run the cropped PDF through a PDF compressor afterwards.
Which option fits which job?
"Automatic — all pages the same size" takes, for each edge, the smallest margin found on any page. No page loses content and the pages stay uniform, which suits books, slides and anything you will print.
"Automatic — each page cropped on its own" trims short pages harder, so page sizes differ. It gains the most space for reading on a phone or an e-reader. Completely blank pages are left alone and counted in the result line.
"Manual" is for borders that sit in the same place on every page: a black scan edge, a punched-hole shadow, a letterhead band. On pages rotated by 90 degrees the edges follow what you see on screen.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove white margins from a PDF?
Select the PDF, keep the default "Automatic" option and press Crop. The tool measures where the content starts on each page and trims everything outside it, leaving a 2 mm gap. Type another value into the gap field to change that; 0 crops right up to the content.
Is the cropped part removed from the file?
No. Cropping hides the area outside the new box, but that content stays in the file and a PDF editor can bring it back. If sensitive information must be gone, use a redaction tool instead.
Can I crop in inches?
The fields take millimeters. Multiply inches by 25.4: 0.25 in is 6.35 mm, 0.5 in is 12.7 mm and 1 in is 25.4 mm. Type one number for all edges, or four numbers for top, right, bottom and left.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Measuring and cropping run entirely in your browser; the file never leaves this page and is not sent to any server.
