APNG to GIF

Turn an animated PNG sticker into a GIF that plays in every app; timing is kept

Choose APNG filesTap or click the box — a file picker opens. You can also drag a file onto it.Animated PNG (.png or .apng). A still PNG becomes a one-frame GIF; the file never leaves your device

Your files stay with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; no file is ever uploaded to a server.

How it works

Tap or click the box and choose your animated PNG. APNG files usually end in .png; LINE stickers and some website animations are this kind of file. The tool opens the file on your device, decodes every frame and applies APNG's rules for drawing frames on top of each other, so each frame becomes a complete picture; then it writes those pictures as a GIF with one shared palette. Frame times are read in milliseconds and rounded to GIF's step of one hundredth of a second, and the loop count is kept (an APNG that loops forever becomes a GIF that loops forever). The only setting is the number of colors: 256 looks best, 64 makes flat drawings smaller. Example: a 320×270 LINE sticker with 20 frames at 0.1 s plays for 2 seconds, and the GIF keeps the same duration. The result line shows frames, size, total duration, color count and file size. If the file is not animated, it says so and writes a one-frame GIF.

This tool is also known as apng to gif, animated png to gif, convert apng to gif, apng gif converter, line sticker to gif, apng to gif online.

What is APNG to GIF conversion?

Converting APNG to GIF moves the frames of an animated PNG into the GIF format, which plays in almost every app. APNG frames often contain only the part of the image that changed and are drawn on top of the previous one, so taking frames one by one gives wrong pictures. This tool first applies the drawing and clearing rules (dispose and blend), builds the complete picture for every frame, then reduces those pictures to GIF's 256-color palette. Frame times and the loop count are written to the GIF unchanged.

What is 1-bit transparency (GIF transparency)?

In a GIF a pixel is either fully visible or fully transparent; there is nothing in between. An APNG pixel can take 256 levels of transparency. During conversion, semi-transparent pixels are split down the middle: a pixel that is more than half visible becomes fully visible, the rest becomes fully transparent. On a sticker with round edges that means slightly jagged edges; on a white background it is rarely noticeable, on a dark one more so. The result line mentions it when the file has semi-transparent pixels.

What is the difference between APNG and GIF?

APNG is an animated PNG with full color (16 million colors) and 256 levels of transparency; its edges are smooth and its gradients clean, but it does not play everywhere. GIF carries at most 256 colors and on/off transparency; it can look rougher, but it plays almost everywhere from WhatsApp to email. Converting APNG to GIF trades quality for compatibility: frames and timing stay, colors and soft edges are simplified. For the opposite direction use the APNG maker.

What is kept and what changes

Kept exactly: the number of frames, each frame's duration, the loop count and the width and height. Because APNG frames are drawn on top of each other, the tool decodes every frame as a complete picture, so the GIF has no shifted frames or leftovers. Durations are rounded to GIF's hundredth-of-a-second step; browsers play durations below 0.02 s at about 0.1 s anyway, so the tool writes those as 0.1 s.

Changed: colors drop to 256 (or the number you choose) and are written with one shared palette, so colors do not flicker between frames, but photo-like animations can show slight banding. Semi-transparent edges become fully transparent or fully solid. The file can end up larger or smaller than the APNG; the result line shows both sizes side by side.

When should you convert to GIF?

Convert when you upload somewhere that does not understand APNG: WhatsApp, email, some forums and social media uploads show only the first frame of an APNG. If you want to share an animated sticker you saved from a website in a chat, GIF is the safest format. On your own website, do not convert: all current browsers play APNG, and APNG looks cleaner.

If the GIF is too large, reduce the colors to 128 or 64; if that is not enough, use the GIF compressor to shrink the dimensions or skip frames. If jagged edges on a dark background bother you, GIF has no real fix; keep the APNG for that use.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my PNG is animated?

Open the file in a browser tab: if it moves, it is an APNG. The extension is usually still .png, so the name does not tell you. If you give this tool a still PNG, the result line warns "not animated" and writes a one-frame GIF.

Does the animation speed change in the GIF?

No. Each frame's duration is kept and only rounded to GIF's hundredth-of-a-second step; the total duration is shown in the result line. The one exception is frames shorter than 0.02 s: browsers already play those at about 0.1 s in a GIF, and the tool writes that value.

Does the transparent background stay transparent?

Yes, transparent areas stay transparent. Only the semi-transparent parts change: GIF has no partial transparency, so soft edges and shadows become either fully transparent or fully visible. On a white background this is rarely noticeable.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The APNG never leaves your device; decoding the frames and writing the GIF happen inside your browser, and the page keeps working offline after it loads.
