How it works

Choose your photos, set the strength with the slider and press Sharpen. The tool applies an unsharp mask: it builds a slightly blurred copy of the picture, takes the difference between the copy and the original, and adds that difference back — edge contrast rises, and the eye reads the image as sharper. As a working example, a slightly soft 4000-pixel phone photo of a plate of food gains visible texture and crisp rims at strength 4-5, while strength 8 and above starts producing bright halos along edges and gritty noise in flat areas. Know the limit before you rely on it: sharpening amplifies edges the sensor actually recorded, it cannot reconstruct detail an out-of-focus shot never captured. A JPG source comes back as JPG, PNG and WEBP sources come back as PNG with transparency preserved, and you can process several photos in one batch.

What is unsharp mask?

The unsharp mask is, despite its name, the classic sharpening method: the software builds a slightly blurred copy of the image, computes the difference between the original and that copy, multiplies it by the chosen strength and adds it back. The difference is large only along edges, so flat areas stay untouched while transitions get steeper — which the eye perceives as added sharpness. The name comes from the darkroom, where printers achieved the same effect with a blurred negative copy. This tool builds the blurred copy with a three-pass box blur and scales the radius with the image's longer edge.

What is halo?

A halo is the most recognisable trace of over-sharpening: a bright line appears along the edge of a dark object, or a dark rim along a light one. It follows directly from how sharpening works — raising contrast across an edge pushes the light side lighter and the dark side darker, and as strength and radius grow, that band becomes wide enough to see. High-contrast edges such as rooftops, branches and poles against the sky show halos first. Check your result at 100% zoom; if you can see a fringe, step the strength down a notch or two.

What is the difference between sharpening and AI enhancement?

Sharpening mathematically raises the contrast of edges recorded in the file; it adds nothing that was not in the frame, so every pixel of the result is still your photograph. AI enhancement instead predicts the missing detail from millions of training images: it can turn a blurry face into a crisp one, but that face is now partly the model's invention and may carry lines that never existed. For documents, evidence or anything with identification value that difference is critical; for casual snapshots AI may look more impressive. This tool uses the first method and adds no guesses to your data.

Sharpening does not bring lost detail back

This tool makes an honest promise: an unsharp mask raises the contrast of edges that already exist in the file. No filter can recreate detail that was never recorded because of focus error, camera shake or heavy blurring. Apps that appear to do so use AI to invent plausible pixels — the result is a guess, not your photograph.

Overdoing it has a visible cost too: at high strengths a bright fringe (halo) appears around dark edges, fine grain in flat areas turns gritty, and JPG compression artifacts become obvious. Raise the strength step by step and inspect the result at 100% zoom; your original file is never touched, so experimenting is safe.

Which strength for which job?

The right strength depends on the source and on where the image will be used. Trying a few settings takes seconds; these ranges are a starting point.

  • Strength 1-3 → restoring crispness after downscaling; web and social media exports
  • Strength 4-6 → bringing out texture and edges in phone photos; general use
  • Strength 7-8 → making text legible in scanned documents and old prints
  • Strength 9-10 → only for very soft sources, accepting the risk of halos and grain

Can this tool fix a blurry photo?

No. The sharpening runs entirely inside your browser; neither the file nor its name or content is sent anywhere. That makes it safe for sensitive images too.
