Reverse Text Generator: Backwards, Upside Down and Mirror Text

Write text backwards, reverse the word order, or flip it upside down (ʇxǝʇ) and into mirror writing; emoji stay in one piece

Your data stays with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; nothing is sent to a server.

How it works

Type your text in the left box and the reversed version appears on the right as you type. 'Backwards letters' writes each line from end to start: 'Hello' becomes 'olleH'. Line order is kept, so in a multi-line text every line is reversed in place. 'Reverse word order' leaves the letters alone and flips the sequence of words: 'one two three' becomes 'three two one'. 'Upside down' writes the text as if the page had been turned 180 degrees: the order is reversed and each letter is swapped for a Unicode character that looks like its rotated form, so 'hello' becomes 'ollǝɥ'. 'Mirror writing' shows the text as it would appear in a mirror: each line runs right to left and letters are replaced by their mirrored look-alikes. Emoji, skin-tone modifiers, flags and letters built from several code points count as one character and are never split. A few letters, mainly accented ones, have no rotated or mirrored look-alike in Unicode; they are kept as they are and the status line lists them.

This tool is also known as reverse text generator, backwards text, upside down text, mirror text generator, flip text.

What is Grapheme cluster?

A grapheme cluster is what a reader perceives as a single character. Most letters are one Unicode code point, but many visible characters are several: 👋🏽 is two (hand plus skin tone), a family emoji can be five joined by zero-width joiners, and an e with a separately stored accent is two. Reversing text code point by code point tears these apart. This tool uses the browser's Intl.Segmenter to split text into grapheme clusters and reverses those instead.

What is Mirror writing?

Mirror writing is text that reads normally when viewed in a mirror: it runs from right to left and every letter is horizontally flipped. The best-known everyday example is the word AMBULANCE painted in reverse on the front of ambulances so that drivers read it correctly in their rear-view mirror. Leonardo da Vinci famously filled his notebooks with mirror writing. In plain text the effect is imitated with Unicode characters that resemble flipped letters.

What is the difference between reverse text and fancy text?

Fancy text changes how letters look but not their order: 'Hello' is written with other Unicode characters that look bold, italic or cursive, and it still reads left to right. Reverse text changes the direction: it writes letters or words backwards, and in the upside-down and mirror modes it also turns the letters. Use a fancy text generator when you want a name that stands out but reads normally; use reverse text when you want something that has to be read backwards, upside down or in a mirror.

How upside-down text works

There is no upside-down font on your phone. Upside-down text is built from other Unicode characters that happen to look like rotated letters: ǝ (U+01DD) from the phonetic alphabet stands in for a turned e, ɥ (U+0265) for a turned h, and the mathematical 'for all' sign ∀ for a turned A. The result is plain text, so it pastes anywhere without installing anything.

That is also where the limits come from. Not every letter has a look-alike, so some capitals and most accented letters stay unchanged; the tool reports them instead of dropping them silently. Very old phones may show rare characters as empty boxes.

Which mode for which job?

Each mode does something different; these are the most common uses.

  • Backwards letters: puzzles, secret notes, checking palindromes (racecar → racecar)
  • Reverse word order: poetry experiments, sentence drills
  • Upside down: Instagram bio, WhatsApp status, gamer tag
  • Mirror writing: text meant to be read in a mirror, like AMBULANCE on the front of an ambulance

Frequently asked questions

Why don't emoji break when reversed?

The tool splits text into the characters you actually see, not raw code points. A waving hand with a skin tone or a family emoji is several code points glued together; they move as one unit, so 👋🏽 keeps its colour when reversed.

Can I turn upside-down text back to normal?

Yes. Paste the upside-down text into the left box and choose 'Upside down' again; the mapping works both ways. The same is true for mirror writing.

Why are some letters not flipped?

Unicode has no character that looks like the rotated or mirrored form of every letter, especially accented ones such as é or ü. They stay as they are, and the status line says how many and which.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser; the text never leaves this page.
