PDF to HTML (Text and Headings)

Turn the text of a PDF into a clean HTML page with real headings, paragraphs and lists

Choose the PDF to convert to HTMLTap or click the box — a file picker opens. You can also drag a file onto it.PDF — text, headings and lists are carried over; page layout, tables and images are not

Your files stay with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; no file is ever uploaded to a server.

How it works

Tap or click the box, choose the PDF and press Convert to HTML. The tool reads the text line by line: short lines in a larger font become headings, lines that run on become paragraphs, and lines starting with a dash, bullet or number become list items. A 6-page city newsletter, for example, gives "6 pages → 9 headings, 31 paragraphs, 12 list items"; running headers and page numbers that repeat on every page are dropped automatically. Open the downloaded file in your browser to read it, or open it in a plain text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit and paste the code into your website editor. Characters like "<" and "&" in the text are escaped, so they cannot break your page. Tables, columns, images and colors are not carried over: the tool moves the words, not the layout.

This tool is also known as pdf to html, convert pdf to html, pdf to html converter, pdf text to html, pdf to web page.

What is HTML?

HTML is the markup language web pages are written in: each piece of text is wrapped in a tag that says what it is. <h1> is the main heading, <p> is a paragraph, <ul> with <li> is a bulleted list. Browsers use these tags to lay out the text, and search engines use them to tell a heading from body copy. This tool produces exactly those tags, so the output pastes cleanly into any CMS or email builder.

What is Semantic HTML?

Semantic HTML marks what a piece of text does rather than how it looks: instead of "this line is 24 pt and bold" it says "this line is a heading". Your site's own fonts and colors then decide the look. That is why text coming out of this tool does not look foreign when pasted into a site, screen readers can jump between headings, and lines wrap properly on a phone screen.

What is the difference between text HTML and layout-preserving HTML?

Some converters imitate the look of the PDF: every word is placed in its own absolutely positioned box at the exact spot it had on the page. It resembles the PDF on a desktop screen, but the code is unmaintainable, it overflows on phones and search engines cannot read the sentences as sentences. This tool deliberately takes the other route and moves only the text, as headings, paragraphs and lists. The page will look different, and in return the code is short, clean and usable anywhere.

Which PDFs give good results?

Single-column documents saved from Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice convert best: announcements, policies, user guides, newsletter articles. If headings are set clearly larger than the body text, the tool separates them into h1, h2 and h3.

On two-column magazine pages, lines at the same height can merge into one line, and tables turn into a run of short paragraphs. Check the output of such documents before publishing it.

A scanned document has no text layer; each page is a photo. The tool says so and stops, because it does not do OCR (text recognition).

Adding the output to a website

In WordPress and similar editors, switch to the code editor or "Edit as HTML" view, open the .html file in a text editor, copy the lines between <body> and </body> and paste them. The short style block at the top only makes the file readable when opened on its own; once pasted, your site's design applies.

For an email newsletter, you can also open the file in your browser, select the text and copy it: headings and lists paste with their formatting.

  • Choose "Hide" if page-break lines are not wanted on the web page
  • Heading levels are inferred from font size in the PDF; adjust by hand if needed
  • Links and images are not carried over; add them again in your editor

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to HTML?

Choose your PDF on this page and press Convert to HTML. An .html file with tagged headings, paragraphs and lists goes to your Downloads folder; no sign-up and no upload.

Will the HTML look exactly like the PDF?

No, by design. The tool keeps the meaning of the text, not its position: headings stay headings and paragraphs stay paragraphs. Tables, columns, images, colors and fonts are not carried over; your website's design decides the look.

Are accented and special characters kept?

Yes. The file is written as UTF-8 and says so in its header, so characters such as é, ñ, ü or curly quotes show correctly. If the PDF itself stores characters wrongly, which happens with some older files, the error carries over.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Reading the PDF and writing the HTML both happen inside your browser; the file never leaves this page.
