How it works
Choose your JPG files, set the quality value and press the button. The pixel dimensions never change; the only thing that changes is how the picture is encoded inside the file. WEBP writes the same image with fewer bytes than JPEG, so a typical photograph shrinks noticeably, and the lower the quality the bigger the saving. Below 60 the loss shows up first in wide flat areas — a clear sky, a painted wall — as blotches and banding. Every result line prints the old size, the new size and the percentage saved, so you can change the setting and run the same files again. Your source file is not touched and stays on your device exactly as it was.

What is WEBP?
WEBP is the format you reach for when a picture is about to go on a web page, and its value shows up in the bytes a visitor has to download. It stores the same photograph in fewer bytes than JPEG, which is why speed reports usually stop flagging oversized images once you switch. Nothing has to be configured on the server side: upload the file, link to it, and the browser recognises the format on its own.
What is re-encoding?
Re-encoding means decoding a file and writing it out again in a different format, which is exactly what happens between JPG and WEBP here. The part worth knowing: the source JPG was already compressed with loss, so some detail is gone for good and no new encoding brings it back. The second pass then discards a little more of its own, which is why a low quality setting leaves visible marks sooner than it would on a file made straight from the original.
Which is smaller for the same photo, WEBP or JPG?
At the same visual quality WEBP almost always produces the smaller file, and the gap is widest on pictures with large plain areas. What JPG keeps is compatibility: every program, every upload form and every print service opens it. So the decision comes down to destination — WEBP for an image that will be displayed on a web page, JPG for one that will be sent somewhere or archived for years. Keeping both copies is a common and sensible habit.
Which quality for a faster page?
Page speed is the usual reason for moving to WEBP. Speed reports list oversized photographs as a direct warning, and one of the fixes they suggest is a modern format: sending the same picture in fewer bytes shortens the wait before the page is usable.
For photographs inside an article, 75 to 85 is a safe starting range. For product shots, portfolio images and anything that may be printed, stay at 90 or above — you give up a slice of the saving and keep the detail.

You are re-encoding an already compressed file
The JPG in your hand has been compressed once already; this tool decodes it and writes it out again as WEBP. Detail that was thrown away does not come back, and a second encoding pass is applied on top of the first. That is why pushing the quality down leaves visible traces faster here than on a photo encoded straight from the camera.
If you still have the RAW or PNG original, convert from that file instead — the result is always cleaner. If the JPG is all you have, around 80 buys a real saving at a difference the eye does not catch.
How large the saving is depends on the picture itself. Images with big plain areas shrink a lot; a landscape packed with texture in every corner will not match that ratio. Occasionally a file does not shrink at all, and the result line says so plainly.
Where WEBP works and where it does not
Every current browser displays WEBP, so websites, e-commerce panels and content management systems are safe ground. Trouble begins off the web: some older office programs, print services and official upload forms reject the format outright.
Treat WEBP as the copy you publish, not as your archive. Keep the original JPG, and when an institution asks you for an image, send the JPG.
