How it works
A classroom banner, a seating chart for a wedding, a floor plan for a yard sale: it needs to be big, but your printer only takes Letter paper. Tap or click the box, choose the PDF, pick the poster size and press Make poster. The tool enlarges the page you chose and splits it into sheets: at 2 × 2 a Letter page becomes a poster of about 15 × 20 inches. Each sheet has a grid label in its corner such as A1, A2, B1 or B2; the letter is the row and the number is the column, so A1 is the top-left sheet. There is a 1 cm (0.4 in) white border with crop marks at the corners, and neighboring sheets share the same 8 mm strip of the image, so you can line up the picture while gluing. When printing, set the scale to "Actual size" or 100%.
This tool is also known as pdf poster printing, print pdf on multiple pages, tile print pdf, print large pdf on letter paper, split pdf page into multiple pages for printing.
What is Tile printing (poster printing)?
Tile printing splits one large image into pieces the size your printer can handle and prints each piece on its own sheet; laid side by side, the sheets form the full image like floor tiles. In this tool the pieces are labeled by row and column, and neighboring sheets share a strip along their edge so no gap shows at the seams.
What is Overlap (glue strip)?
The overlap is the strip printed on both of two neighboring sheets; here it is 8 mm, about 0.3 inch, wide. You trim the white border of the right-hand sheet along the marks and lay it over the left-hand sheet so its edge sits on the dashed line: the 8 mm below is hidden and takes the glue or tape. Even if your cut is a millimeter off, no white line appears in the picture.
What is the difference between poster printing and changing the page size?
With the PDF page size tool you can enlarge a Letter page to A3 (11.7 × 16.5 in), but then you need a printer that takes that paper, usually at a copy shop. Poster printing instead splits the big image into pieces that your home or office Letter printer can handle; you do the joining with scissors and tape. For a clean, single-piece result, use large paper; for an immediate, no-cost result, use poster printing.
Trimming and joining the sheets
Lay the sheets out by their labels: row A at the top, column 1 on the left. Trim each sheet's white border along the lines that connect the corner crop marks; you may leave the white on the poster's outer edges.
Start joining at the top left. Lay A2 over A1 so the trimmed left edge of A2 sits on the vertical dashed line printed on A1; the 8 mm of image on both sheets now overlap. Join the next row the same way, over the horizontal dashed line along the bottom of the row above. Taping from the back leaves no marks on the front.
- Printer scale: actual size (100%), not "fit to page"
- Trim: along the corner marks, with a ruler and craft knife
- Joining order: left to right, then top to bottom
Why it stays sharp, and which PDFs blur
In PDFs saved from Word, Canva or a drawing program, text and lines are vectors: they are redrawn at the larger size and stay sharp even on a 4 × 4 poster. The tool splits the page without turning it into a picture, so that property is kept.
Photos and scanned pages inside the PDF are made of pixels and soften as they grow. A 150 DPI scan printed 3 × 3 turns each pixel into about half a millimeter; it looks rough up close and fine from a couple of steps away. The enlargement factor in the result line helps you decide.
Frequently asked questions
How do I print one PDF page on multiple sheets of paper?
Choose the PDF on this page, pick the poster size and press Make poster. Each page of the downloaded PDF is one piece of the poster; print them on ordinary Letter paper at 100% scale and join them by their labels.
Does every page of a multi-page PDF become a poster?
No; a poster is made from a single page. Type, for example, 3 in the page-number field and only page 3 is enlarged. For several pages, run the tool once per page number.
Why is there a white border on every sheet?
Most home and office printers cannot print right up to the edge of the paper. The tool leaves a 1 cm (0.4 in) border and draws the crop marks there; you trim it off and lose nothing of the image.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Enlarging the page and splitting it into sheets happens inside your browser; the PDF never leaves this page.
