Convert a Photo to Black and White or Sepia

Turn a color photo into black and white, or give it a warm old-photograph sepia tone

Choose your photosTap or click the box — a file picker opens. You can also drag a file onto it.JPG, PNG or WEBP

Your files stay with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; no file is ever uploaded to a server.

How it works

Choose your photos, pick a filter and press Apply. The black and white option reduces every pixel to a weighted brightness value that mimics how the eye ranks the three primary colors — greens come out light, blues come out dark — which is why the result looks natural rather than flatly desaturated. The sepia option applies the same reduction and then shifts shadows towards brown and highlights towards a warm yellow, the look of chemically toned prints. A 3.2 MB phone photo typically drops below 2 MB once its color detail is gone, because a single-tone image compresses better; the before-and-after size is printed on each file's result line. A JPG source comes back as JPG; PNG and WEBP sources come back as PNG with transparency preserved, and you can process several photos in one batch.

This tool is also known as convert photo to black and white, black and white filter, sepia filter online, make a picture black and white, grayscale image converter.

What is grayscale?

Grayscale reduces each pixel's red, green and blue values to a single brightness value. The three channels are not simply averaged: the eye is far more sensitive to green than to red, and to red than to blue, so the channels are weighted at roughly 30% red, 59% green and 11% blue. Those weights are why grass turns light gray and a blue sky turns dark, and why the result resembles classic black and white film rather than a washed-out desaturation. The reduction is one-way — the original colors cannot be reconstructed from the gray values.

What is sepia?

Sepia is the warm brown-yellow tone named after the ink of the cuttlefish. In the darkroom era, black and white prints were bathed in a sepia toner that converted the image silver into a more stable compound — the treatment extended the life of the print and left behind the characteristic brown cast. Digital sepia imitates that look: the image is first reduced to brightness, then shadows are pulled towards brown and highlights towards cream. It is the reason most surviving family photographs from a century ago are brown, and the filter reproduces exactly that patina.

What is the difference between black and white and sepia?

Both throw away the color information; the difference is how the remaining single tone is painted. Black and white maps brightness onto neutral steps of gray — the darkest point is black, the lightest is white, and no color intrudes. Sepia maps the same steps onto a brown-to-cream scale: shadows become deep coffee tones, highlights turn warm. Black and white reads as documentary, sharp and timeless; sepia deliberately ages the image and adds warmth. The distinction also matters in print: a black and white file reproduces faithfully on a mono laser printer, while sepia needs a color printer to show its tone at all.

The color never comes back — keep the original

Converting to black and white is a one-way operation: three color channels collapse into a single brightness value, and the file no longer records which gray came from red and which from green. No tool can restore the original colors from the output; AI colorization only produces a guess, not the colors that were actually in front of the camera.

That is why this tool never touches your source file. It writes a new file and appends -siyah-beyaz or -sepya to the name so you cannot overwrite the original by accident. If there is any chance you will want the color version later, keep it.

Black and white or sepia — which one when?

The two filters do different jobs. Grayscale reads as neutral and documentary; sepia adds warmth and deliberate age.

  • ID photos, CVs and corporate profile pictures → black and white
  • Documents and flyers headed for a laser printer → black and white (saves toner)
  • Invitations, anniversary cards, memory walls → sepia
  • Making one album out of photos whose colors clash → either filter; the consistency comes from the conversion

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a photo black and white?

Choose the photo from the box, leave the filter on black and white and press Apply. The converted file downloads with one tap, and you can convert several photos at once.

Can I get the colors back afterwards?

Not from the converted file — the color information is simply not written into it. Because this tool never modifies your source file, going back to color means going back to the original.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser; neither the file nor its name or content is sent anywhere. The open page keeps working even if your connection drops.

Why is the black and white file smaller?

JPEG compresses color detail separately from brightness. With no color detail left, the same quality needs less space. The saving varies by photo and is shown as before → after on each result line.
