How it works

When a lawyer, an HR department, a court or an insurer asks for an email as a document, what you usually have is an .eml file, which phones cannot open and which is awkward to print. First save the email as .eml: in Gmail open the message and choose the three dots > Download message, in Outlook on the web choose the three dots > Download, and in Thunderbird or Apple Mail use Save As. Then select the file on this page and press Convert to PDF. The PDF starts with the subject in large type, followed by the From, To, Cc and Date lines and then the message text; attachments are listed at the end with their name and size. Example: an email titled "Lease renewal" with two PDF attachments becomes a one-page PDF whose last lines read "lease.pdf — 240 KB" and so on. The date is converted from the email's time zone to your device's clock and written like "Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 10:00 AM". The attachments themselves are not copied into the PDF; for photo attachments choose "List + print JPG/PNG attachments on the page".

What is EML file?

An EML file stores one email in its raw form: the sender, recipient, date and subject headers, the body (usually twice, as plain text and as HTML) and every attachment all sit in the same file. Attachments are embedded as base64 text, so a 1 MB attachment makes the .eml about 1.4 MB larger. Gmail, Outlook on the web, Thunderbird and Apple Mail all download messages in this format.

What is MIME?

MIME is the rule set that splits an email into parts: the plain-text body, the HTML version and each attachment live in separate sections, each with headers stating its type and encoding. Subject lines with accented letters are encoded under the same rules, as in "=?UTF-8?B?...?=". This tool decodes the parts in order, picks the readable text and separates the attachments, which is why accents come out right.

What is the difference between EML and MSG?

EML is the open text format shared by every mail program; Gmail, Thunderbird, Apple Mail and Outlook on the web all download messages as .eml. MSG is desktop Outlook's own proprietary format, stored inside a Microsoft compound file container. This tool reads EML only; it recognizes an MSG file and tells you how to get an .eml instead.

What the PDF includes and leaves out

Included: subject, sender, recipients, Cc line, date, the message text and the list of attachments. When an email carries both a plain-text and an HTML version, the plain text is used; if there is only HTML, the tags are removed and link addresses are written in parentheses next to the link text.

Left out: the HTML email's colors, fonts, table layout and logos. The text in the PDF is selectable and searchable, but it is not a picture of how the email looked on screen. If you need the exact look, open the email in your mail program and use Print > Save as PDF.

What happens to attachments?

Attachment contents are not copied into the PDF; they are listed at the end with name and size, so whoever reads the document can see which files came with the email. With "List + print JPG/PNG attachments on the page", JPG and PNG photos are printed full width below the list; PDF, Word and other attachments are still only listed.

Signature logos embedded in the email also count as attachments and appear as "unnamed attachment" when they have no name. If you need to keep the attachments themselves, save them from your mail program.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an EML file to PDF?

Select the .eml file on this page and press Convert to PDF. The headers, the message text and the attachment list are laid out as selectable text in a Letter-size PDF, and the file never leaves your browser.

How do I open an EML file?

On Windows, Outlook or the Mail app opens .eml files; on a Mac, Apple Mail does. Phones often have no app for it, and converting to PDF is then the easiest route because a PDF opens everywhere.

How do I download a Gmail message as .eml?

Open the email, press the three dots at the top right and choose "Download message". Convert the downloaded .eml file on this page. In Outlook on the web, the three-dot menu has a "Download" command that does the same.

Will special characters come out garbled?

No. Encoded subject lines and older emails written in legacy character sets such as windows-1252 or ISO-8859-1 are decoded correctly, and a font covering accented Latin letters is embedded in the PDF.
