How it works

Quality 85 is the usual sweet spot: on a photographic image it typically cuts the file to a fifth of the PNG with no visible difference. Drop to 60 only when the file must fit a hard size limit, and check the result before you use it — the loss cannot be undone. What is PNG?

PNG is a lossless image format: it stores every pixel exactly as it was and supports a transparent background. That is why it suits screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or flat colour. The price of that exactness is size — a photograph saved as PNG is often five to ten times larger than the same photograph as JPG, because photographic detail is precisely the kind of data lossless compression cannot shrink.

What is JPG?

JPG (also written JPEG) is a lossy format built for photographs. It throws away detail the eye is least likely to notice and rebuilds the picture from what remains, which is why the file gets dramatically smaller. The discarded detail never comes back: saving the same image as JPG again and again degrades it a little each time. JPG also has no transparency — any transparent area has to be filled with a solid colour.

PNG or JPG — which should you use?

Use PNG when the image has text, sharp lines, flat colour areas or a transparent background: a screenshot saved as JPG gets fuzzy halos around letters that no quality setting removes. Use JPG for photographs, where the file may be several times smaller with no visible difference. The rule of thumb: if you can count the colours in the image, keep PNG; if you cannot, JPG will serve you better. And when a page needs the picture to sit on a coloured background, remember that JPG cannot carry transparency — the empty area becomes white unless you fill it deliberately.

Transparency is lost, and that is not a bug

JPG has no channel for transparency. When a PNG with a see-through background is converted, that area has to become a real colour, and the result is white here. If your logo was designed to sit on a dark page, the white block will show.

There is no setting that avoids this — it is what the format is. If you need transparency, stay with PNG or use WEBP, which keeps both transparency and small files.

Quality loss cannot be reversed

Each save re-encodes the picture. Converting PNG to JPG once at quality 85 is usually invisible; converting that JPG back to PNG does not restore anything, it only makes a large file out of a degraded image.

So keep the original PNG. Treat the JPG as an export for a specific purpose — an email, an upload form, a web page — not as your master copy.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser using your own device's processor. The files never travel over the network, which is also why the tool keeps working if your connection drops mid-conversion.

What quality setting should I choose?

Start at 85. For photographs that is normally indistinguishable from the original at a fraction of the size. Go below 70 only when a strict size limit forces you to, and look at the result at full size before using it.

Why did my file get bigger instead of smaller?

That happens with images JPG was not built for — screenshots, logos, line drawings and anything with large flat colour areas. PNG compresses those extremely well, so the JPG version can end up larger. For that kind of image, PNG is the right format to keep.

Can I convert several files at once?
