How it works
Choose your GIF files, pick the output format and press the button. The browser's own image decoder does the work, and because it produces a single picture from an animated file, what you get is the first frame; the remaining frames and the loop information do not travel with it. In other words this tool flattens an animation into one still image, which is exactly what you want for a cover picture or a preview. Pick PNG and the transparent areas stay transparent with the colours untouched; pick JPG and those areas are filled with white, in exchange for a noticeably smaller file on photographic frames. The pixel dimensions are the same either way.

What is GIF?
GIF is an old format that is still everywhere, because it can keep several frames and the on-screen duration of each one inside a single file; most of the short looping clips on the web are GIFs. Its hard limit is colour: a frame carries at most 256 of them, so photographs come out with stepped gradients and lost texture. It supports transparency, but only as an on-off switch — a pixel is either fully visible or fully clear, with no partial values in between.
What is a frame?
A frame is one still picture inside a moving file; an animation is nothing more than those pictures shown one after another. Converting a GIF into a still format therefore means choosing one frame and letting the rest go. When a browser's image decoder is asked for a single picture from an animated file, it hands back the first frame, which is why the output is always the opening image. Reaching a frame from the middle needs a separate editor that can step through them.
What is the difference between GIF and PNG?
The two formats answer two different needs. GIF can carry motion but is capped at 256 colours and knows transparency only as on or off, which is why its soft edges look ragged. PNG carries no motion; in exchange it stores millions of colours without loss and keeps a separate transparency value for every pixel, so soft shadows and rounded corners come out clean. If your file moves and the movement matters, it should stay a GIF; if a single frame is enough, PNG gives you a cleaner and more flexible result.
Why the motion is not kept
A GIF can hold several frames in one file, along with how long each of them stays on screen. PNG and JPG store a single picture; by design there is nowhere in them for an animation to go.
This tool hands the GIF to the browser's image decoder and asks for one picture, and the picture it returns is the first frame. If you need the whole animation, do not convert at all — use the GIF as it is.
What this conversion is for
The most common case is a place that refuses moving files: printing, a presentation slide, an attachment to an official form and some content management panels accept still images only. Pulling out the first frame makes the file acceptable there.
The second use is a cover image: take a one-frame preview out of an animated clip and use it inside an article or on a share card.

The first frame may not be the frame you expect
Some GIF files open on a blank, dimmed or background-only frame, with the real picture arriving a moment later. On such a file the output looks nothing like what you had in mind.
Open the downloaded file before you use it anywhere. If you need a different frame, you need an editor that can step through them; this tool only ever returns the first one.

Can I extract every frame of a GIF?
No. This tool saves the first frame only. Separating all of them takes an image editor that can step through frames one by one.
Is the animation preserved in the output?
It is not. PNG and JPG hold a single picture, so the motion information is lost in the conversion and you are left with one still frame.
Should I pick PNG or JPG?
Pick PNG if the frame has transparent areas or sharp-edged graphics. Pick JPG if the frame is photographic and the file needs to be small; the transparent areas turn white.
What happens with a still GIF?
A single-frame GIF loses nothing: the whole picture is saved in the format you chose and the pixel dimensions stay the same.
