Convert Excel to PDF

Turn an .xlsx, .xls or .csv spreadsheet into a PDF with selectable text

Choose your Excel filesTap or click the box — a file picker opens. You can also drag a file onto it..xlsx, .xlsm, .xls and .csv; spreadsheets saved from Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice (ODS is not accepted)

Your files stay with you. Conversion happens inside the browser; no file is ever uploaded to a server.

How it works

Tap or click the box and pick your Excel file; .xlsx, .xlsm, .xls and .csv files are accepted, and you can select several at once. The tool reads every worksheet in the workbook, skips empty ones and lays the rest out in order; when a workbook has more than one sheet, each starts on a new PDF page under its tab name. Columns share the page width equally, so a table that runs off the right edge in Excel is never cut off in the PDF: a 12-column expense sheet fits the width of a landscape Letter page at 8 pt, and long cell text wraps inside its cell. The "Automatic" settings make those choices for you: up to 6 columns get a portrait page at 10 or 9 pt, wider tables get a landscape page and 9 to 6 pt depending on the column count. Cells are written the way Excel displays them: 3/15/2026 dates, 18% percentages and $1,250.00 amounts stay as they are, and formulas are replaced by their results. The result line reports the page count, the number of worksheets and the widest table's rows × columns.

This tool is also known as excel to pdf, xlsx to pdf, convert excel to pdf, excel to pdf fit to one page, xls to pdf converter, spreadsheet to pdf, excel to pdf online free.

What is XLSX?

XLSX has been Excel's workbook format since 2007. Under the hood it is a ZIP package of XML parts: each worksheet is a separate part, and cell values are stored apart from the number and date formats that decide how they look. This tool opens the package on your device, reads the text each cell displays in Excel and writes that into the PDF; the results of formulas are written, not the formulas. The older .xls (Excel 97–2003) format is read too, as is .xlsm with macros — the macros are never run, only the cells are read. LibreOffice's .ods format is not read on this page; save the file in Excel format first.

What is Worksheet?

A worksheet is one of the tabs along the bottom of the Excel window; a workbook can hold several (Income, Expenses, Summary and so on). The split is kept in the PDF: every worksheet with content starts on a new page under its tab name, empty tabs are skipped and the result line says how many sheets were handled. To print only one tab, do not delete the others in Excel; move that tab to a new workbook and save it, because the tool always lays out the whole workbook.

What is the difference between Excel and PDF?

An Excel file is a live spreadsheet: formulas recalculate, column widths depend on the screen it is opened on, a table with no print area spills off the right edge of the paper, and someone without Excel cannot open it at all. A PDF is a fixed page layout: it looks the same on every device, the values cannot change, and phones and browsers open it without extra software. This tool fits the table to the page and writes it as a PDF with selectable text, but the table no longer calculates anything, cell formatting (colours, borders, merged cells) is not carried over, and column widths are shared equally instead of matching Excel.

Why does the table fit the page width, and what is lost?

The most common problem with Excel's own PDF export is a table spilling to the right, with columns pushed onto a second or third page. This tool never splits columns: it divides the page width equally between them and wraps any cell text that does not fit inside its cell. As the column count grows, the type gets smaller and the page turns landscape; even a 20-column table fits the width of a landscape Letter page at 6 pt, though it becomes hard to read. Such a table is better trimmed in Excel by deleting unneeded columns rather than hiding them, because hidden columns are printed too.

Not carried over: cell colours, borders, merged cells (the text stays in the top-left cell and the merged area looks empty), charts, pictures and comments. Column widths are equal rather than as set in Excel, so a one-letter column takes the same width as a long description column. There is a cap of 5,000 rows per sheet; a longer list is cut off and the result line says so. Dates, percentages, currency and thousands separators are written as the cell shows them in Excel; a date with no format assigned comes out as year-month-day.

Which setting for which spreadsheet?

The automatic settings cover most spreadsheets: an invoice list, a grade sheet or an expense report is set portrait up to 6 columns and landscape above that. Pick landscape by hand when a 5- or 6-column table holds long text (addresses, descriptions), so cell text wraps less. Pick portrait by hand for a long two- or three-column list, which would leave a landscape page half empty and take twice as many pages. A smaller font size fits more rows and columns on fewer pages; 7 pt is still legible in print but needs zooming on a phone.

The paper size follows the page language — Letter on this English page; choose A4 for a recipient in the UK, Europe or India. A .csv file is accepted too: the delimiter (comma or semicolon) is detected automatically, but since CSV carries no formatting, dates and amounts appear exactly as written in the file. Password-protected and ODS files cannot be opened; remove the password in Excel and save as .xlsx. To shrink the PDF afterwards, feed the downloaded file to the compress PDF tool on this site.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fit an Excel sheet on one page as a PDF?

This tool never pushes columns onto a second page: all columns are fitted to the page width, a wide table turns landscape and the type gets smaller. If there are too many rows, the table continues down onto further pages; to cut the page count, lower the font size to 8 or 7 pt. Unlike Excel's "fit to one page" scaling, the table is never shrunk to an unreadable size; 6 pt is the floor.

What happens to a workbook with several worksheets?

Every worksheet with content is laid out on a new PDF page starting with its tab name, in the same order as the tabs in Excel; empty tabs are skipped. The result line says how many worksheets were handled. If you need just one tab, copy it into a separate workbook and save that.

Do dates and currency amounts come out right?

Each cell is written with the text Excel shows on screen: formats such as 3/15/2026, 18% and $1,250.00 are kept, and formulas are replaced by their calculated results. A date with no format assigned comes out as year-month-day; in a .csv file there is no format information, so values appear as written in the file. A column that shows "#####" in Excel because it is too narrow is written with its full value in the PDF.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your Excel file never leaves your device: opening the package, reading the cells and writing the PDF all happen inside your browser. That matters for payroll, customer lists and budgets. Once the page has loaded, the conversion works even with the internet disconnected.
