How it works
Type how many you need into the left panel and pick the unit. To fill a draft page, 3-5 paragraphs are enough: type 3 and each paragraph comes separated by a blank line, with the first one opening on the familiar "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" sentence. To test a heading field with a 60-character limit, switch the unit to words and generate 8-10 of them — the word unit returns an exact count, and the result line also shows the number of characters. For a menu or feature-list draft, pick list items: each line becomes a short dash-led phrase. Set the opening to random and the text starts with different words on every run instead of the classic sentence — practical when a page uses several filler blocks and they should not look like copies of each other. The text regenerates whenever you change the number or an option; Copy output puts it on the clipboard and the download button saves lorem-ipsum.txt.
This tool is also known as lorem ipsum generator, placeholder text generator, dummy text generator, lorem ipsum paragraphs, filler text, lorem ipsum words.
What is Lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is the printing and design trade's standard filler text: a Latin-looking passage made meaningless by clipping and scrambling words from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. It has been used in type specimens for centuries; Letraset's dry-transfer sheets in the 1960s and desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker in the 1980s carried it to its modern ubiquity. Its strength lies precisely in its meaninglessness: it resembles the distribution of real text without drawing the reader into content.
What is Placeholder (dummy) text?
Placeholder text is temporary copy that stands in for real content while a design is still being built. Its job is to exercise the layout: type size, line spacing, column width and the balance of blocks become visible before any content is written. A good placeholder resembles the word-length distribution of a real language without attracting attention — which is why lorem ipsum became the standard. On the way from draft to release every placeholder must be replaced with real content; a forgotten block survives on the live page as meaningless Latin.
The publishing trap: filler text left on a live page
The best-known lorem ipsum accident is placeholder text surviving into production — it turns up even on major brands' product pages. The trap is sneaky: spell checkers usually skip the Latin words as foreign, and the eye slides over the familiar "Lorem ipsum" block as if it were part of the design. To a search engine, though, it is just content: it gets indexed and lowers the page's chance of matching real queries in its language. Searching your site for the word "lorem" before release takes seconds and prevents the accident entirely.
The second misunderstanding is treating the text as meaningful Latin: lorem ipsum is deliberately mangled, clipped vocabulary with no translation as a whole. That is by design — readable but meaningless text lets a reviewer judge the layout without being pulled into the content. For the same reason it has a limit: real English has different word-length rhythms than the Latin filler, so check final line breaks and character limits with real content in the last pass.
Paragraphs, words or list items?
The three units do three different jobs; picking the right one saves you from splitting the output by hand.
- Page, blog post or email draft → 3-5 paragraphs: ready blocks separated by blank lines
- Character limit of a heading, description or form field → words: exact count, characters in the result line
- Menus, feature lists, card titles → list items: each line a short phrase
- Several filler blocks on one page → set the opening to random so the blocks don't look like copies
Frequently asked questions
What does lorem ipsum actually mean?
Nothing, as a whole — it is deliberately broken text. Its source is De finibus bonorum et malorum, a treatise on ethics Cicero wrote in 45 BC; typesetters scrambled the passage and clipped its words into nonsense. Even "lorem" is not a complete word: it is a fragment of "dolorem ipsum", meaning pain itself.
Do I get the same text every time?
No. With the classic opening enabled only the start is fixed — the first sentence of a paragraph run, the first words of a word run, the first item of a list. The rest is assembled at random from the lorem ipsum vocabulary on every run, and changing the number or an option regenerates the text. Copy it or download the file if you want to keep a particular result.
Is lorem ipsum free to use in commercial work?
Yes. The text has been the shared property of the typesetting trade for centuries, and because it derives from a source two thousand years old, copyright is not an issue. The only limit is practical, not legal: filler text belongs in drafts and must not be left in the shipped product.
Why not use real sample text instead of nonsense?
At the draft stage the nonsense is deliberate: readable copy pulls everyone who looks at the design into reading and debating the content, so the meeting about layout turns into a meeting about words. Lorem ipsum does not steal that attention. Real text has its place at the end — character limits and line breaks are verified with real content in the final pass.
