How it works
Type how many words you want in the left box and they appear on the right straight away. Example: you are playing Pictionary with friends and need one word per round. Type 30 and keep the type on Nouns; you get 30 different drawable things such as "owl", "umbrella" or "bridge", and no word repeats. For a writing prompt, choose "All mixed", draw 3 words and try to use all three in one paragraph. Learning Spanish? Set the language to Spanish and the article to Show: you get "la ventana", "el puente", "la llave" with their gender. If you ask for more words than the list holds, the tool returns the whole list in random order and says so under the result.
This tool is also known as random word generator, random noun generator, pictionary word generator, random spanish word generator, random french word generator, random adjective generator.
What is Random word?
A random word is one drawn by lot from a list, in a way nobody can predict. Games use random words so everyone starts on equal terms, writers use them to break habits, and language learners use them to stop memorising words in the same order. This tool shuffles the list with the browser's cryptographic random source, which also guarantees that no word comes up twice in one draw.
What is Grammatical gender and articles?
In German, French and Spanish every noun has a grammatical gender, and the article in front of it shows which: der, die, das in German; le, la in French; el, la in Spanish. English speakers have no such system, which is why the article has to be learned together with the noun. Gender is often arbitrary: the German word for spoon, Löffel, is masculine and fork, Gabel, is feminine.
What is the difference between random words and lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is meaningless Latin filler text used in design so that nobody reads the words and only the layout is judged. Random words are real words in a real language, meant to be read and used one by one: drawn in a game, worked into a sentence, learned as vocabulary. If you need placeholder text for a layout, use the lorem ipsum generator; if you need meaningful words, use this tool.
How the lists were built: spell-checked, and what was left out on purpose
Each language has about 130 nouns, 60 adjectives and 65 verbs stored inside the tool, and every word passed that language's spelling dictionary. No licensed frequency list was copied; the words were chosen for everyday use.
Some words are missing on purpose: two-word phrases, nouns used only in the plural (French lunettes, Spanish tijeras) and words that change between countries (Spanish computadora in Mexico, ordenador in Spain). That way every word is familiar on both sides of the Atlantic.
With articles on, French nouns starting with a vowel take l' and, because the gender is then hidden, get it in brackets: l'arbre (m.). Spanish feminine nouns starting with a stressed a (the el agua exception) were left out.
Which setting for which game or exercise?
Pictionary, charades, Heads Up: choose nouns; the noun list is made of concrete things that can be drawn or acted. Taboo works best with nouns too.
Writing prompts and creative writing: choose "All mixed" and draw 3 to 5 words. Adjectives come in their base form, verbs in the base (dictionary) form.
Vocabulary practice: pick the language, turn on articles and make flashcards of 10 words at a time. French and Spanish adjectives are shown in the masculine singular.
- No word repeats within one draw
- If the list runs out, you get all of it in random order
- Words are drawn on your device and sent nowhere
Frequently asked questions
How do I get random words for Pictionary?
Keep the word type on Nouns and type how many rounds you want to play. The noun list holds single, easy-to-draw things like apple, bicycle or lantern. No word appears twice in one draw, so you can print the list and cut it into cards.
Can I get random Spanish or French words with their article?
Yes. Set the language to Spanish or French and the article to Show. Spanish nouns come with el or la; French nouns with le or la, and those starting with a vowel with l' plus the gender in brackets. German gives der, die or das. Adjectives and verbs never get an article.
How many words are in the list?
About 130 nouns, 60 adjectives and 65 verbs per language. If you ask for more, the tool does not stop with an error; it returns the whole list in random order and shows how many words it holds.
Are these the most common words in English?
They are everyday words, but not a ranked frequency list: the most frequent English words are mostly "the", "of" and "to", which are useless for games. The lists favour concrete nouns, common adjectives and action verbs that are easy to draw, act or write about.
