What does 300 DPI mean?
Tie DPI to pixels with one formula and a worked print example
You are about to send a photograph somewhere and the instructions say "must be at least 300 DPI". You have no idea where to look for the DPI of your file, and your phone's photo app certainly does not show it. The good news: DPI is not a hidden quality setting inside the file, and one short division tells you whether you meet the requirement.
The quickest way to understand DPI is to treat it as a multiplier: it ties the pixels in the file to inches on paper. This guide builds that link first, then works a 4×6 inch print all the way through.
What is DPI actually counting?
DPI stands for dots per inch. An inch is 2.54 centimetres, so DPI answers the question "how many dots go into one inch of paper". At 300 DPI, three hundred dots are packed into that inch.
The distinction that matters: DPI is a ratio, not a measurement. On its own it tells you nothing about how big or how good a file is. The pixel count says how many dots the picture is made of; the DPI decides how tightly those dots sit on the sheet.
Print the same file at different DPI values and the picture does not change — the size does. Spread the dots out and the print grows and falls apart when you lean in; pack them together and it shrinks and sharpens.
The formula, and a 4×6 inch print
The maths is one line: pixels = inches × DPI. If your measurement is in centimetres, divide by 2.54 first to turn it into inches, then multiply.
Take the most common photo print, 4×6 inches, at 300 DPI. Short edge: 4 × 300 = 1200 pixels. Long edge: 6 × 300 = 1800 pixels. So the file you hand to the print shop needs to be at least 1200 × 1800 pixels. The metric equivalent, 10×15 cm, works out at 1181 × 1772 pixels — 10 ÷ 2.54 × 300 and 15 ÷ 2.54 × 300.
Finding your own file's pixel dimensions takes a moment. On Windows, right-click the file, choose Properties and open the Details tab. Mac users highlight the picture and hit Command-I. On a phone, open the picture and swipe up, or tap the info button. The "4032 × 3024" you see there is the number you want.

Why DPI never shows up on screen
Open the photograph on a computer and you will see no trace of its DPI; zoom in and out all you like, the number never budges. The reason is simple: a screen has dots of its own and the file cannot change them. The display puts each pixel of the picture into one of its own pixels and ignores the DPI label entirely.
So DPI only means something once the file reaches a physical surface — paper, a T-shirt, a poster. Until then it sits inside the file as a note, rather like a "fragile" sticker on a parcel: it changes nothing about the contents, it only says how they should be handled.
That is why "I set my photo to 300 DPI and nothing happened" is both a common feeling and a correct one. The number that needs to change is not the DPI, it is the pixel count.
How much DPI does the job need?
300 DPI is the figure for anything held in the hand and looked at closely: photo prints, business cards, book pages, submitted paperwork. At that density the eye cannot separate individual dots, so going higher buys no visible improvement and simply inflates the file.
Work viewed from a distance needs less, because detail stops registering as the viewer steps back. A large poster for a wall prints happily at 150 DPI; from a metre away nobody can tell. For shopfront or building-sized work, use the figure the printer gives you — ask the company doing the job.
72 DPI, in practice, means "nobody specified a print size". It was taught for years as the screen standard, but today's displays have no such constant; a file marked 72 is simply a file whose print dimensions were never set.
When the form demands 300 DPI
Translate the demand first. If an office asks for "2×2 inches at 300 DPI", what it actually wants is a file of 600 × 600 pixels, and the same formula gets you there. If your file is bigger than the required pixel count, you are fine — shrinking is always allowed. If it is smaller, enlarging will not save you: adding pixels adds no detail, it only spreads the existing dots and the print comes out soft. In that case reshoot at a higher resolution, or dig out the original file if one exists.

The common mistake: editing the label
Some programs offer a box where you can type a DPI value by hand. Changing that number from 72 to 300 leaves the pixel count untouched; the print comes out a quarter of the size and gains no detail whatsoever. Same picture, printed smaller.
The operation that genuinely changes things is resampling, where the pixel count itself is rewritten. Downwards this is safe: surplus dots are discarded and sharpness holds. Upwards, the program invents information it does not have by guessing from neighbouring pixels, and the result looks soft and lifeless.
In short, raising the DPI does not raise the quality. Quality was decided by the number of pixels captured in the first place, and that number never truly grows afterwards.
